Digital transformation provides opportunities for developing new business models by innovating mechanisms for production, distribution and organisation based on digital technologies. Through disintermediation and reintermediation of business relationships, digital entrepreneurship challenges conventional rules of competition and builds rapid scaling-up with network externality and generativity. Digital transformation has intensified the interconnection between of the art world and the art market, converting cultural values into commodities, services and experiences at an exponential speed. Digital transformation also facilitates the creation of new business models in the art world, which aim to accelerate and enrich the experience of cultural consumption. Technologies, such augmented reality and artificial intelligence play a vital role in cultural consumption. Digital transformation has given rise to new platforms that disrupt established intermediaries in the art world (disintermediation) while successful platforms have already established themselves as key intermediaries (reintermediation). This seminar will examine the impact of digital transformation of the art world from the viewpoint of business model innovation.
