Four decades of theorizing and research on social networks generated numerous insights into their structures and consequences. However, we need a better understanding of methods for uncovering complex structural relations among multiple social entities.

In the first of two presentations, Professor David Knoke discusses tripartite social network analysis: three types of entities (such as people, organizations, and events) have direct connections between but not within types. In restricted tripartite networks, two types of entities have relations with a third type but not with one another.

Two methods for identifying positions within tripartite networks are core/periphery and optimal modularity models. A core/periphery model maximizes the density among entities in the core position and minimizes the density within the peripheral position. In contrast, the optimal modularity procedure maximizes the densities within the two communities, while minimizing between-community relations.

In the second presentation, Professor Knoke describes an application of restricted tripartite network analysis methods to private interest organizations, government agencies, and legislative events in the U.S. labor policy domain, where both types of organizations have interests in the legislative events but not in one another. He also discusses opportunities for conducting future tripartite network research on health care and social services, economic, and political networks.
