½²×ù¸ÅÒª£ºIn this talk, I will first introduce the importance of population data and how they are used by governments at federal, state and local levels in the U.S.. Then I will illustrate the points by telling two actual stories in our work for the State of Virginia: (1). how a careful, credible demographic study enabled the Virginia legislature to change the law, and helped the state government to reduce costs, improve data quality, and ultimately, allocate funds fairly; and (2) how a comprehensive school enrollment projections study helped a local government to make an informed decision in its capital planning. Lastly, I will talk about effective communication as an integral part of applied demography to translate rigorous academic research to meaningful, easy-to-understand language for policy-makers and the general public.
