Molecules interact through weak attractive forces in a process called recognition. The forces operate when the molecules are complementary in size, shape and chemical surface. This lecture describes the architecture of recognition: how molecules with concave surfaces are used to make container hosts that confine small molecule guests. The synthesis, the intermolecular forces and the motions involved in the recognition event are discussed. We show hosts that completely surround the guests (capsules) and others with open ends (cavitands) and describe how guests get in and out of these containers. The use of the hosts as reaction vessels and their applications in difficult separations are reported.
