Biography: Prof. Chen received the B.S. and Ph.D degrees in Microwave and Electro-magnetic Field Engineering from Shanghai University, Shanghai, China, in 1999 and 2004, respectively. From 2004 to 2006, he was continuing his research as a research fellow in Kanagawa University, Japan. From 2006, he joined the faculty of Kanagawa University as a research assistant. He became an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the same university in 2006 and 2016, respectively.  His interested research fields include microwave/millimeter-wave/THz passive circuits, materials¡¯ EM-property measurement and EMC related techniques. In 2006, he received the 3rd prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award and granted Young Researcher's Award of The Institute of Electronics, IEICE, Japan. In 2016, he received Distinguished Contributions Award from Electronics Society of IEICE, Japan. Dr. Chen is a member of IEEE. He has served on the Review Board of IEEE MWCL, IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation and the Editorial/Review Board of IEICE Transactions on Electronics, the Editorial/Review Board of IEICE ELEX, Japan. He is a member of the Technical Committee for 2014 and the Organization Committee for 2018 APMC.

Abstract: A photonic crystal(PhC) is a periodic arrangement with a ~ ¦Ë of a dielectric/metallic material and has very special property --- bandgap. Recently, PhCs have been raising a lot of attention from scientists and engineers since they have great potential in the design of novel functional devices in MW/MM/THz regime. This lecture delivers a basic introduction of the applications of 2D PhC for the design of novel MW/MM/THz planar devices. As examples, PhC resonators and filters will be presented.
